Ai Weiwei participated in TED 2011 by sending in an pre-recorded film discussing his life and practice. The conference took place in March 2011 and Ai watched the film live over the web, greeting the audience at its conclusion. On April 4, 2011, one month later, Ai was arrested at the Beijing Capital International Airport and secretly detained for 81 days.
