In 2009, while installing his exhibition at the Haus der Kunst in Munich, Ai Weiwei required immediate hospitalization and, subsequently, emergency brain surgery. The cause for the pain was a cerebral hemorrhage, which was caused by the beating he suffered in Chengdu. Brain Inflation depicts the brain scans showing the injury he suffered by the Chinese authorities.
